Crytek, developer of Crysis and Ryse has announced another VR-exclusive game: The Climb, and it’s coming exclusively to the Oculus Rift in 2016.

Looking like the ultimate VR thrill ride (but possibly the worst nightmare for those with vertigo), the game promises to let players climb and scale impossibly vast cliffs without the aid of ropes or a safety net. A training ground will be present alongside various difficulty settings, and you can expect to find yourself scaling vast and stunning climbing ranges which include one in Southeastern Asia (seen in the screens and trailer on this page).

Controlling the game sounds reasonably easy, with the player looking towards the next hand-hole or ledge before tapping either shoulder button to reach out and grab it. If the ledge is too far away then it’s possible to leap towards it, but you’ll need to judge distances and angle correctly to make a successful grab. Both the Xbox One pad and the Oculus Touch controllers are supported, although it’s not clear at this stage whether the Touch controllers will offer more accurate input.

“Crytek is renowned for leveraging their CryEngine tech to create beautiful, immersive games. Their early VR demos really captured public imagination, and to see their ideas come to life with Rift is incredible and not to be missed,” said Oculus head of worldwide studios Jason Rubin. “The Climb is a beautiful combination of art and thrill that’s bringing an entirely new level of adventure gaming to Rift.”

Designed to run at 90 FPS on the recommended Oculus Rift CV1 hardware (think Core i7, NVIDIA 970 GTX and 16GB RAM), The Climb should be a fun and challenging addition to the Rift’s game library when it launches in the first quarter of 2016.
