Rock Band VR has been announced as a launch title for the Oculus Rift CV1.
The announcement was revealed at the 2015 Games Awards, with a two minute teaser that featured UK power-metal band DragonForce, Harmonix team members and Oculus Founder Palmer Luckey. The video (embedded above) is clearly scripted, and features more acting/set-up scenes than in-game footage, but from the brief clips towards the end of the video we can see some nice first-person gameplay that demonstrates the atmosphere, detail and character animation expected to be found in the final game.
Note the guitar controller seen around 0:45 mark, which clearly includes an Oculus Touch component on the head of the guitar. Hopefully this means both input and movement is recorded to enable some pretty sweet on-stage moves. As to whether it will be possible to headbang while wearing the Oculus Rift headset is another question we’re looking forward to answering next year when the CV1 headset is released.
Hopefully we’ll find out more about Rock Band VR in the coming months. We’ve yet to see what social features the game will include (we’re guessing there will be plenty of opportunities for teams of players to rock-out on virtual stages), nor do we have any details on gameplay modes, tracks and pricing. Still, it’s great to see the Rock Band brand make its way to virtual reality in time for the CV1 launch.
